An amazing thing happens when you become a business owner. All of a sudden, everything that you hold dear and important about your service or product is expected to fit into a 250 x 250 pixel square.

This stamp, (or brand) offers a prospective client a first impression – and you know what they say about first impressions? You only get to make them once. That is why I find so many business owners AGONIZING over this first hurdle. Nike did it with the swoop. Target did it with the big red circle. Maybe all of the good logos are taken.

What is your brand going to say about you?

If you are having a hard time creating a visual representation of your business, never fear. Here are a couple of tips that should help you to clarify how you wish to be represented as a company.

Choose 5 brands that you admire

For each of these brands, ask yourself the following questions.

  • How does this brand make me feel?
  • How do people perceive me when they see me using this brand?
  • What visual elements stand out? Are there any commonalities between these 5 brands and how they are visually represented?
  • Can my product or service include those visual elements?

Here are a couple of our favorite brands and what they are doing online.
